Talk to Orthopedic Surgeon on 4th Metacarpal Fracture

person-avatar

Asking for Self, Male, 28 years old, Karachi

28yo Male. I broke my left arm's 4th metacarpal bone while punching 5 weeks ago. I went to nearby ortho they took xray (attached) and put kacha plaster which stay on from week 0 to week 2. Week 2 they removed kacha plaster and took xray (attached) then they put fiber plaster from week 2 to week 5. On week 5 fiber was cut and x-ray was taken (attached). Doctor told me if situation didn't improve in next 2 weeks then I should get a surgery.

Currently I don't have any cast or anything on my hand. I'm putting my hand warm water daily. I can also move fingers freely without pain. I'm not having any pain but I can't close fully close hand to make punch.

Any expert ortho please suggest if surgery is really the last option for this?

Should I start going to physiotherapy? doc told me to do some exercises at home.

Can I force fingers to bend from knuckle? or is it dangerous for current fracture?

It’s a spiral fracture, should have gone for surgery from the start!

Thank you dr haseeb. Bone seems to be healing fine as per multiple doctor opinions. Yesterday, I went to another experienced doctor, he told me there's no need for surgery. Hopefully it'll heal without surgery.

May Allah bless you.

looks like it's healing with a bit of shortening..just concentrate on your physiotherapy it will take sometime but you will have fully healed bone with range of motion ..you have to re educate your muscles and power them up gradually

Looks fracture is healing. Give more time . Take things lightly avoid weight lifting with fractured hand, gentle range of motion exercises. Repeat Xray in 2 to 3 weeks time
