Asking for Mother, Female, 53 years old, Larkana
Hello, I’m sharing my mother’s leg X-ray. Both bones are fractured. She is a diabetic patient, and we are scared about the surgery because of her condition. What should we do?
Thank you
Both bones are fractured, better to go for surgery. Diabetes if it\'s not controlled can be controlled before surgery. Even if you decide to go for plaster treatment without surgery it has its own complications in diabetic patient like pressure ulcers , stiffness in joints.
So go for surgery in the best interest of patient.
Hope for the best Inshallah
Regards
There is fracture of both bones of leg just above the ankle (Distal SOT/F ).There is dire need of fixation of this fracture , However considering the diabetes , minimal invasive surgery with incision i.e Close reduction +Nailling is recommended option for this patient. We can arrange this for you in Lahore in best setup of lahore after optimization of patient. you can get online consultation for details of procedure and booking of surgery if you want to be operated in best care.

Doctor, after surgery, if her sugar fluctuates again at home despite insulin, can it affect bone healing or cause infection? What sugar range should be maintained during recovery?

Okay, doctor, thank you so much for your guidance. We understand surgery may be better. Our concern is: before surgery, her sugar can be controlled in the hospital, but after discharge, if her sugar becomes uncontrolled again at home, can it affect the recovery or surgery results? She is already on insulin.

Postoperative diabetes management should not be a problem. Any physician , endocrinologist can guide you appropriately, as insulin dose may need to increase .
