Unfortunately there is no simple or one-size-fits-all solution for your mothers problem. Three months have passed since your mothers surgery so most likely biofilm has been formed on the implant so antibiotics alone cannot eradicate the infection completely. If the bone is healing the surgical team can go for long term antibiotics to suppress the infection so that the bone can heal and the implant now redundant can then be removed. If however, the infection is spreading then the surgical team will go removal of implant, local debridment and once the infection has been treated then another surgery for the fracture. This will be done alongwith good glycemic control with the help of a Medical Specialist/Endcrinologist and appropriate infection management by an Infectious Diseases Consultant.
