Talk to Orthopedic Surgeon on Oil Massage While Taking Physiotherapy

person-avatar

Asking for Someone Else, Sister, Female, 41 years old, Lahore

ASalaam Alaikum I would like to clarify something: My physiotherapist has advised me to avoid massage during physiotherapy, whereas my orthopedic specialist has said that gentle massage using a mixture of gel and oil is acceptable. Is oil massage contraindicated while undergoing physiotherapy, or does it depend on the nature of the condition and treatment plan?

As an orthopedic surgeon it depends on your condition for which you are getting physiotherapy. Please, elaborate further.

For cervical spondylosis avoid massage with force or pressure on the spine (bone) itself. It is safe and specially helpful for muscle spasms with muscle knots. However, keep in mind that the massage only provides pain relief it is not a treatment in itself the real treatment is adherence with the physiotherapy program for strengthening of muscles, awareness and correction of your posture etc. Also, the therapeutic effect of massage depends is mechanical so manual (with hands), massage guns, roller, balls etc are equally effective so use whatever method you find convenient.

Do you have any idea how long this treatment can last specially the problem is on going since almost 9 years regardless of taking physio sessions for years

Sorry without proper inperson history and physical examination no one can give a prediction on the time it will it take for the issue to resolve. As the patient has symptoms for the last 9 years so she has clearly gone into chronic pain category and by the book requires multidisciplinary treatment. If you can get consultation with a pain management specialist. In chronic pain exercise definitely helps so she can get benefit from yoga or pilates in addition to physiotherapy and posture awareness and correction during day to day activities will also help.
