TMJ Jaw Problem

Question

My wife have a TMJ on both side of the jaw . I went to Maxillofacial surgeon he just gave a pain killers that's it. is pain killers the solution for rest of the life . is there any other solution to TMJ . He told me to use splint but they are too expensive
