If a baby is not showing interest in complementary feeding (solid foods in addition to breastmilk/formula), it’s a common concern—especially between 6 to 9 months of age. Here's a step-by-step approach you can take as a pediatrician or parent:

? Steps to Encourage Complementary Feeding

1. Start When Baby Shows Readiness Signs

Can sit with support and hold their head steady.

Shows interest in food or watches others eat.

Loses tongue-thrust reflex (doesn't push food out with tongue).

2. Choose the Right Time

Offer food when the baby is alert, happy, and not too hungry or full.

Avoid forcing solids when baby is cranky, sleepy, or sick.

3. Offer Small Amounts

Start with 1–2 teaspoons once a day.

Use a soft-tipped spoon or even your clean finger initially.

4. Try Various Textures & Tastes

Start with:

Iron-rich foods: mashed lentils, soft egg yolk, meat puree.

Single-grain cereals (like rice, oat).

Mashed fruits (banana, apple) and veggies (carrot, pumpkin).

Gradually introduce different tastes and don’t give up after one refusal. It may take 8–10 tries for a baby to accept a new food.

5. Model Eating Behavior

Eat in front of the baby. Let them see you chew and enjoy food.

Offer food from your plate (if safe and healthy).

6. Encourage Self-Feeding (Baby-Led Weaning style)

Offer soft, finger-sized foods the baby can hold.

Boiled carrot sticks, banana pieces, toast strips.

It builds interest and motor skills.

7. Keep Mealtime Pleasant

No pressure or scolding.

Smile and talk positively about food.

Praise even small bites or licking the food.

8. Avoid Distractions

Turn off TV or mobile screens.

Sit face-to-face and engage baby in feeding.

9. Maintain Breastfeeding

Continue breastfeeding up to 2 years and beyond.

Give solids after or between breastfeeds at this stage.

? When to Be Concerned

Refer or investigate if:

Baby is not gaining weight.

Has persistent vomiting, diarrhea, or oral aversion.

Signs of developmental delay.
