In the United States, 1 to 2 children in 1000 born babies suffer from hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus can be caused by many factors. Nowadays, this is the most common cause of brain surgery in children. Hydrocephalus is the accumulation of fluid in the cavities (ventricles) deep in the brain. Excess fluid increases the size of the ventricles and pollutes the brain. The cerebrospinal fluid normally passes through the ventricles and bathes the brain and spine. However, the excess cerebrospinal fluid associated with hydrocephalus may damage the brain tissue and cause various changes in brain function..This condition may arise due to some birth defects, meningitis, brain tumor or any type of brain injury.
Hydrocephalus can occur at any age but is more common in infants and adults over 60 years of age. Through the surgical treatment of hydrocephalus, normal brain gland fluid can be restored and maintained in the brain.
