Claustrophobia is anxiety disorder causing distress in closed spaces. Although it is irrational but seems very true. As a result, a person experiences panic like symptoms, such as rapid heart rate, rapid but shallow breathing, sweating, dizziness, restlessness, nausea, difficulty in breathing and fear not being able to get out of confined space and probably fear of dying. It may be a learned behaviour or a response to past traumatic stress. The best and most effective way to treat phobias is by combining Exposure Therapy through imagery and Relaxation Techniques via Deep Breathing. It is done under strict supervision of an expert psychotherapist. Depending upon the severity, adjunct treatment may be necessary with a low dose of benzodiazepines and SSRIs. Medicines are chemicals and do have side-effects, but side effects are very minor as compared to the distress that the individual is going through and are easily managable. To be suffering from any fear or phobia is in itself is an extremely agonizing condition. So, entering therapy at the earliest is vitally important.
