Asking For Other, Male 17, Islamabad

My son recently started using Caragin (Lamotrigine) 1/2 + 1 and Seon (Sertraline) 1 + 0 under advice of Psychiatrist. Since start of medicine his sleep is extremely disturbed as he used to have a very sound sleep before this medicine. Please advise how his sleep can be improved?

The psychotropics can take some time to adjust with the body and if any of the medicine has some intolerable side effects for someone, the medication can be changed too but its better to give a trial for 4 to 6 weeks before switching medication.Usually mild adverse effects like sleep disturbance, stomach issues, appetite or nausea settle down within 2 to 4 weeks. Some of very effective medicines pose problems initially but within 2 to 4 weeks body adjusts with medication and also medicine starts its effect meanwhile, the condition improves. The best approach is to consult same psychiatrist in followup who knows the details of the case rather than switching doctor right from start.Patience and regular followup is the key to management.

Thank you for sharing.
Sertralin in some people causes sleep disturbance. This either can be helped by adding medication to improve sleep or switch to another medication after detail assessment.

Sertealine can induce slow and if it is taken in the morning he may be having daytime sleepiness. Take it at night and encourage the child in healthy exercise and walks. Ask him to lie down and relax all his muscles of his body, he should try deep breathing exercises for atleast 20 minutes prior to sleep and that will surely help induce sleep. Watch youtube for breathing meditative exercises for sleep.
