Depression Medicines

My brother is feeling very down and out from last one year . He took some sleeping pills back then. He has sudden mood change most of the time depressive.He start blaming himself for useless things . He never got violent . Dr suggested him some medicines but we are not satisfied with those include lamictal , seroxat and persch . We want to discontinue these medicines and want some counselling or alternate medicines for his treatment. Advice please.
