No. Psychotherapy and medication work side by side. Psychotherapy alone can not be the substitute.

Assalamualaikum. Yes psychotherapy is effective alone as well as with medications. It depends upon the severity of the disorder. Sometimes both the psychotherapy and medications run together for better outcome. You can consult me via Marham Application for consultation.

Medication are important if the problem is so sever that the person cant even concentrate what he is told. But if symptoms are moderate and the person is able to concentrate what he or she is told than sessions are effective. No of sessions depends on individual progress in a sessions plus the condition of the problem.. time duration of the illness can also effect the no of session required.

First of all it is needed whats the intensity of Panic attacks? And level of anxiety either severe or moderate? Usually 8 therapeutic sessions would enough (except assessment session). Also panic disorder and other anxiety disorders are absolutely treatable by psychotherapy. Don't worry, in fact it's the better choice :)

Cognitive behavioral therapy for panic attacks and panic disorder lasts about twelve sessions for most people, with most people with most people reporting improvement after the first few sessions. Some people respond more quickly, needing fewer sessions, while others need more than twelve sessions due to other complicating factors such as depression or OCD.
Moreover, psychotherapy will help you to identify triggers and cognitive errors.
If you are having acute physical symptoms so medications would play an important role but meanwhile start your psychotherapy sessions to identify the triggers.

Different people respond to treatments differently. Therefore, if the medication does not help, try adding therapy. The combination of medication and psychotherapy have been shown to help people with symptoms of depression or anxiety.
However , the length of therapy depends on the intensity and number of symptoms you want to work on. Therapist and client decide the number of sessions after history taking and goal setting for therapy.
