Before your visit
- Fasting needed. Nothing to eat for 8 to 12 hours before the sample; plain water is fine. Book a morning slot so you fast overnight and can eat as soon as the phlebotomist leaves.
- Keep taking your regular medicines unless your doctor has said otherwise. If you take sugar or blood pressure medicine, take it after the sample and mention it to the phlebotomist.
- Tell the doctor if you have had a fever, an infection, or steroid tablets or injections in the last two weeks. They can push sugar up for a while.
- Tell the doctor if you have anaemia, thalassaemia trait, or a recent blood transfusion. HbA1c can read falsely high or low in these cases, and the fasting reading then matters more.
- Pregnant? This is not the right check for you. Ask your doctor about a glucose tolerance test (GTT), which Marham Lab also does at home.
- Not for children under 12. Have the patient's name and age ready for the report, and a phone with mobile data in a quiet place for the video call.
- One high or borderline value confirms nothing on its own. A diagnosis needs a repeat test, and your doctor will read the full report with you.
