Adenomyosis occurs when the tissue that normally lines the uterus (endometrial tissue) develops in the muscle wall of the uterus. The displaced tissue continues to function normally during the menstrual cycle, thickening, collapse, and bleeding. It is a condition that is characterized by a breakdown of the inner lining of the uterus (the endometrium) through the muscle wall of the uterus (the myometrium). And grows here so, endometrium’s cells can be seen in the myometrium. The result is a hypertrophy of the uterus and painful and heavy periods occurs. The cause of adenomyosis remains unknown, but the disease usually disappears after menopause. Hormonal treatments can help women with adenomyosis. Removal of the uterus (hysterectomy) cures adenomyosis.
It may localize to one point or spread to the whole uterus.
