Summary about Misophonia in English

Misophonia is a disorder in which people react abnormally strongly and negatively to everyday sounds such as chewing or breathing. It is not uncommon for people to be irritated by everyday sounds on occasion. The sound of someone smacking their lips or clicking a pen, on the other hand, can make people with Misophonia want to scream or hit out. These physical and emotional responses to seemingly innocent sounds are similar to the "fight or flight" response and can cause anxiety, panic, and rage.

Symptoms of Misophonia

Following are the responses as symptomatic of Misophonia:

  • disgust turning to anger
  • irritation turning to anger
  • getting physically aggressive with the objects just because of noise
  • becoming verbally aggressive with the person who is making noise
  • taking evasive action against those making trigger sounds
  • physically lashing out at a person making noise

Individuals with Misophonia frequently experience a variety of physical reactions in addition to emotional responses, such as:

  • pressure throughout the body, especially the chest
  • more rapid heartbeat
  • increase in blood pressure
  • muscle tightness
  • increases in the body temperature

Causes of Misophonia

Researchers aren't sure what causes Misophonia, but a variety of factors could be involved:

  • Brain chemistry: A disruption in connectivity of brain parts that process sound stimulation and the fight-or-flight response.
  • Mental conditions: People with Tourette's syndrome, Obsessive-compulsive disorder, or anxiety disorders are more prone to have Misophonia.
  • Tinnitus: Misophonia is thought to affect 4% to 5% of people who suffer from tinnitus, a condition in which people hear noises that no one else can hear, such as a ringing sound.

Preventive Measures of Misophonia

Because Misophonia is a disorder, there is no way to prevent it, but there are some coping strategies, lifestyle changes, and relaxation techniques that can manage the symptoms:

  • Always carry earplugs when exposed to a trigger
  • Plan to relax, for instance, by using deep breathing or visualization techniques when you feel an outburst is imminent
  • Invest in a white noise app or machine to drown out the specific sounds
  • Wear earphones when you start feeling overwhelmed
  • Join any online support group or talk to loved ones about this condition

Treatment

Misophonia can be treated through:

  • Tinnitus retraining therapy
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy
  • Counseling
