About Sinusitis

Sinusitis meaning in Urdu is “ناک کی سوجن” or “سائنس کی سوزش”. It occurs when the tissues lining the sinuses become swollen. The sinuses are air-filled cavities behind your forehead, cheeks, and nose. Normally, they produce mucus that drains through the nose, but when blocked, mucus builds up and causes infection.

Sinusitis can be short-term (acute) or long-term (chronic). It’s usually caused by colds, allergies, or infections. Mild cases get better on their own, others may require medication or medical procedures.

Sinusitis Symptoms

Symptoms of sinusitis vary based on the type and severity. Watch for:

  • Blocked nose
  • Facial pain (especially around eyes, nose, cheeks)
  • Headache
  • Thick yellow or green nasal discharge
  • Reduced sense of smell and taste
  • Cough, worse at night
  • Bad breath
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Tooth pain

Seek medical attention if you notice:

  • Symptoms lasting more than 10 days
  • High fever
  • Severe headache
  • Swelling around eyes
  • Vision changes
  • Recurrent sinus infections

Sinusitis Causes

Several factors can cause sinusitis. Common causes include:

  • Viral infections (like cold or flu)
  • Bacterial infections
  • Fungal infections (rare but serious)
  • Allergies (e.g., pollen, dust mites)
  • Nasal polyps (noncancerous growths)
  • Deviated nasal septum
  • Smoking
  • Air pollution
  • Frequent use of nasal sprays
  • Dental infections
  • Weak immune system

Sinusitis Risk Factors

You may be more likely to get sinusitis if you have:

  • Allergies (especially hay fever)
  • Asthma
  • Deviated septum
  • Frequent colds
  • Weak immune system
  • Exposure to pollutants
  • Use of decongestant sprays for long periods
  • Dental problems or infections
  • History of sinus surgery

Sinusitis Prevention

Reduce your chances of sinusitis with these steps:

  • Wash hands regularly to prevent infections
  • Manage allergies properly
  • Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke
  • Use a humidifier in dry weather
  • Rinse nasal passages with saline
  • Treat colds early
  • Avoid irritants
  • Stay hydrated
  • Get flu and allergy vaccinations
  • Keep dental health in check

Sinusitis Types

Sinusitis is classified based on how long it lasts and what causes it. Each type affects people differently:

Acute Sinusitis:

This type starts suddenly and usually lasts less than 4 weeks. It gets triggered by a cold or viral infection.

Subacute Sinusitis:

This form lasts between 4 to 12 weeks. It follows an untreated acute infection.

Chronic Sinusitis:

It lasts longer than 12 weeks and may continue for months or even years. This type can result from allergies, nasal blockages, or long-term inflammation.

Recurrent Sinusitis:

This involves multiple episodes of acute sinusitis within a year. Each episode may resolve, but it returns frequently, pointing to underlying allergic issues.

Allergic Fungal Sinusitis:

It is a rare and more serious type. It is caused by fungal growth in the sinuses, often in people with allergies or weak immune systems. It may require surgery.

Sinusitis Diagnosis

Doctors use various tests to confirm sinusitis and identify other causes:

  • Physical exam and symptom history
  • Nasal endoscopy to look inside the nose
  • Imaging tests (CT scan or MRI)
  • Allergy tests
  • Nasal or sinus swab
  • Dental X-rays
  • Blood tests

Sinusitis Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the sinusitis. Options include:

Medications:

  • Nasal saline sprays
  • Nasal corticosteroids
  • Decongestants
  • Pain relievers
  • Antibiotics
  • Antihistamines
  • Antifungal drugs

Supportive Care:

  • Steam inhalation for relief
  • Drinking plenty of fluids
  • Warm compresses on the face
  • Rest and hydration
  • Avoiding allergens
  • Avoiding flying or swimming during infection

Surgical Options:

  • Endoscopic sinus surgery to remove blockages
  • Septoplasty for correcting a deviated septum
  • Balloon sinuplasty to open blocked sinuses

Sinusitis Complications

If not treated in time, sinusitis may lead to serious issues:

  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Spread of infection to eyes or brain
  • Meningitis
  • Vision problems
  • Bone infections
  • Severe headaches
  • Asthma flare-ups
  • Nasal polyp formation
  • Persistent breathing issues
  • Chronic cough
