Asking For Other, Male 2, Karachi

This is my son's report. He is thalassemia minor and I am giving him iron supplement ferosoft for a month now but hb keeps declining. Please recommend what should I do as iron supplement doesn't suit him and he gets severely constipated. Doctor suggested iron for a month and then asked me to drop and get him tested. I am also trying to meet iron deficiency through nutritional value by giving him red meat beans green veggies in his diet.

Try changing the brand of the supplement. Use high fiber diet for constipation.

General Physician in Narowal - Dr. Muhammad Haris

Hi . I can understand your concerns regarding your son’s health . Let me tell you some important things in order to reduce the unwanted side-effects of iron such as constipation. 1- Take it with a small amount of food during or shortly after eating.2- Advise him to drink plenty of water . 3- Avoid taking it with milk or antacids. 4- Take stool softeners such as fibre diet including fruits and vegetables. 5 - If it still causes constipation then try an alternative pharmaceutical product. 6- If Hb keeps declining , then consider blood transfusion as it’s the quickest way to maintain Hb within desired range in Thalassemia patients. I hope this will help you in taking care of your son .

I keep high fibre food in his diet and we also tried different stool softener as well. But this constipation persists sometimes for more than a week and when we gets relief his school is all bloodied that's why it concerns me. He's also lactose intolerant so it also adds up
