Asking for Mother, Female, 59 years old, Karachi , Pakistan

My mother is taking a bp medicine amlodipine/valsartan 5/80 since almost 6 months now she started when she had high bp and was also high randomly but now the bp is under control. But when she went to the physician he also suggested ascard daily. She had no other complications but he gave her ascard so she didn't take ascard. I want to know what is the reason to give ascard and how to know if it is required. Now her bp is also doing fine and she is continuing BP med. My question is is ascard necessary how do we know it. Since we are not in the favour of taking lifetime ascard. Thanks

AOA! He has started her Aspirin for primary prevention of heart problems as her age is approaching 60 . It’s Ok to take it regular. Also get her cholesterol levels done .If above normal she might be needing cholesterol lowering medicine along with Ascard( aspirin) to prevent any future risk of cardiovascular system( like heart attack). Good that her BP is doing well with the combination she is using. Thanks

She is not taking ascard at the moment. I wanted to know the tests and requirements that are needed before starting a medicine. I was not willing to add on another lifetime medicine without it being needed. Thank you.

To calculate CV risk first get her lipid profile done. If you have already done and it is normal and she is not having any family history of heart disease and is not diaberic then her calculations would go in favor of not using any Medicine either Aspirin or Statin for the primary prevention of Cardiovascular risk. Thanks
