Talk to Neuro Surgeon on Is Endoscopic Spine Surgery The Right Option For My L5-S1 Disc Herniation?

person-avatar

Asking for Self, Male, 25 years old, Al Ain

I have been suffering from lower back pain with pain radiating down my right leg for about one year. My MRI shows an L5-S1 right paracentral/foraminal disc protrusion with an annular tear, causing compression of the traversing and exiting nerve roots. It also shows a left L4-L5 disc protrusion. A spine surgeon advised that I may either have a lumbar epidural steroid injection or endoscopic spine surgery. I would like a second opinion because many people have told me that spine surgery is dangerous, and I am worried. My questions are: 1 Based on my MRI findings and symptoms, is endoscopic spine surgery an appropriate option for me? 2 Should I try an epidural steroid injection first, or is surgery more suitable? 3 What are the success rates and risks of endoscopic spine surgery for my condition? If I delay surgery, is there a risk of permanent nerve damage? Thank you for your guidance.

Better have surgery and get rid of pain, there are always risk for any procedure, it depends upon surgeon expertise. Most likely you are at good place in Abu Dhabi and will not have any problem.

Surgery is the best and quickest fix to your problem. GOLD standard is micro discectomy. Endoscopic techniques are relatively new. Long term risk and benefit analysis are pending. Possible complications include recurrent herniation and infection risk. Both are minimal risks. All techniques carry negligible risk of nerve damage. Epidural injections are not a option in your case
