Talk to Psychiatry on Should I Vontinue My Medications?

person-avatar

Asking For Self, Male 19, Abbottabad Comsats Uni

I took some appointments with a psychiatrist and a psychologist in abbottabad. They both told me to use the medicines as prescribed which were of 2 weeks. Unfortunately, i couldn't get another appointment after 2 weeks and i continued to use the medications for over 4-5 weeks. Now i thought of leaving the medications but when i left them, one of them was for anxiety or depression (also caused sleepyness). When i stopped taking it i couldn't sleep and lack of focus, mood, communication, everything got much worse. Now my finals are near and i wanna know if i should continue using the medication until my exams end and how do i leave them when i eventually want to?

For now, I would recommend continuing with the medications until you are done with your exams. It is not advised to stop psychotropic medications abruptly as this can result in discontinuation syndrome, which you have described above.
After you are done with exams, you should take a follow-up session with your psychiatrist and slowly taper it down over several weeks, while simultaneously taking help of therapy and exercise etc.

Psychiatric medication is always tapered down gradually if the definite period of treatment of the illness is over. Abrupt discontinuation during course of treatment will produce discontinuation symptoms as in your case you are feeling. If your exams are near, continue prescribed medication till the time exams are over and then consult psychiatrist for re-evaluation of illness and continuation of medicines.

You need to visit your psychiatrist again and take psychotherapy from a psychologist. Medicines are not the only solution for mental related problems. Psychotherapy will teach you some skills which will help you to leave medicines gradually.
