Talk to Psychiatry on Son Behavior Issue With Mother
Asking For Other, Female 38, Lahore
Since my son is growing up, he is now 15 years old. I am witnessing some unusual behavior of him. He often showed me his Penis by describing some itching issues, sometimes due to some pain issues and asked me to apply some cream.
When he was 13, I used to apply scabfree lotion on his whole body even in the private area and it continued for a few days.
Is the above behavior due to past medical issue?

Hello, thank you for reaching out. It is unlikely that applying lotion at the age of 13 years can cause this behaviour. However, this could be because of a number of reasons that we need to explore. First we have to rule out any medical reasons like any infection that might be causing any itching or pain that can provoke anxiety in the young person. After this, we can explore the child ideas of maintaining social boundaries and privacy. I would suggest doing it calming without shaming him so that he can be taught that his is grown up now and showing private parts to others is not reasonable at this age. We also need to explore a bit of his personal desires to address them properly. This should be approached with gentleness rather than being harsh.

If he is getting erection then we need to approach it carefully. He is in a developmental phase and needs to be guided how to go through this stage without causing him embarrassment and shame as it can affect him severely. I would suggest him talking to someone he trusts.

Try talking to him first and ask how does he feel during this time. If he feels aroused try telling him that a lot of people have these urges and he is not the only one that’s why its important to address this while maintaining adequate social boundaries. This talk could be a bit challenging for both of you do take some time and reassure him that this can be managed.

He is currently urging to apply cream in a private area. Until now I applied only 1 time and he got an erection. Since then I didn't apply because I was thinking it can create a bad impact on his mental health. Since then his behavior has been quite frustrating. What immediate action should I take? Should I apply a few times more till the time i makes him understand.

You can ask him to apply himself and talk to him. I would suggest doing it first because it can reinforce his behaviour.
