For women: being unable to get pregnant after 12 months of trying, periods that are irregular or have stopped, or less interest in sex than usual.
MedlinePlus adds a useful caveat about age. If you are 45 or older, testing usually is not needed, because high FSH is a normal sign of perimenopause and menopause. It may still be ordered for a medical reason such as premature menopause at 40 or younger, early menopause before 45, or menopause-like symptoms with an unclear cause.
For men: being unable to get a partner pregnant after 12 months of trying, less interest in sex, a low sperm count, or loss of muscle or body hair.
For both: suspected pituitary problems, which MedlinePlus notes can affect fertility and interest in sex and may cause fatigue, weakness, decreased appetite or weight loss.
For children and teens: MedlinePlus defines early puberty as signs of sexual development before age 8 in girls and 9 in boys, and delayed puberty as no signs by age 13 in girls and 14 in boys.
