What is the Measles IgM test?
Most Cases Need No Blood Test
Saying this plainly, because the clinical picture is usually enough and we would rather you spend nothing.
MedlinePlus states that your provider will perform a physical exam and ask about symptoms, and that the diagnosis can be made by looking at the rash and seeing Koplik spots in the mouth. It then adds: sometimes measles can be hard to diagnose in which case blood tests may need to be done.
So this test is for the uncertain case, the atypical rash, the partially vaccinated child, or where a confirmed diagnosis is needed for public health reporting or for an outbreak investigation. If a doctor has seen the rash and the mouth spots, the test adds cost rather than clarity.

How Contagious It Is
MedlinePlus gives a number that explains why outbreaks move so fast: if one person has the measles, 90% of the people who come in contact with that person will get the measles, unless they have been vaccinated.
It explains that measles spreads by contact with droplets from the nose, mouth or throat of an infected person, and that sneezing and coughing can put contaminated droplets into the air.
A child with measles should be kept away from other children, and especially away from infants and anyone pregnant or immunosuppressed, until a doctor says otherwise.
The Rash and the Timing
MedlinePlus states that symptoms usually begin 10 to 14 days after exposure, called the incubation period, and that rash is often the main symptom. On the rash:
- Usually appears 3 to 5 days after the first signs of being sick
- May last 4 to 7 days
- Usually starts on the head and spreads to other areas, moving down the body
- May appear as flat, discoloured areas and solid, red, raised areas that later join together
- Itches
That downward progression is a useful clue, and so is the timing. A rash that appeared on day one of a fever is behaving differently from measles.
Other symptoms it lists are bloodshot eyes, cough, fever, light sensitivity, muscle pain, red and inflamed eyes, runny nose, sore throat, and tiny white spots inside the mouth called Koplik spots. Those mouth spots are the finding a doctor looks for.
There Is No Antiviral Treatment
MedlinePlus states there is no specific treatment for measles, and that paracetamol, bed rest and humidified air may relieve symptoms.
On vitamin A it says two different things that must be kept apart.
For a child who has measles: some children may need vitamin A supplements, which reduce the risk of death and complications in children who do not get enough vitamin A. This is a decision for the treating doctor.
For prevention: MedlinePlus is explicit that taking vitamin A will not prevent measles, and that taking too much vitamin A can cause serious illnesses such as liver damage.
Do not buy high-dose vitamin A to protect a well child. Give it only if a doctor prescribes it for a child who is ill.
Complications
MedlinePlus states that those who do not have complications such as pneumonia do very well. The complications it lists are bronchitis, diarrhoea, encephalitis meaning irritation and swelling of the brain, ear infection, and pneumonia.
It says to contact your provider if you or your child has symptoms of measles.
Prevention Is the Whole Answer
MedlinePlus states that getting vaccinated is a very effective way to prevent measles, and that people who are not immunised, or who have not received the full immunisation, are at high risk of catching the disease if they are exposed.
For someone already exposed, it notes that taking serum immune globulin within 6 days after being exposed to the virus can reduce the risk of developing measles or make the disease less severe. That is a conversation to have with a doctor immediately rather than after a week.
On the vaccine and autism, MedlinePlus is unambiguous, and this matters because the claim circulates widely here.
- Large studies of thousands of children have found no connection between this or any vaccine and autism
- Reviews by all major health organisations in the United States, Great Britain and elsewhere all found no link between the MMR vaccine and autism
- The study that had first reported a risk of autism from this vaccine has been proven to be fraudulent
