Summary about Gingivitis in English

Gingivitis is the mild form of gum disease (periodontal disease) that causes irritation, redness, and swelling (inflammation) of the gingiva, the part of your gum that surrounds your teeth. Gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more severe gum disease that can result in tooth loss. Gingivitis should be taken seriously and treated as soon as possible.

Symptoms of Gingivitis

Gingivitis symptoms and signs include:

  • Swollen or puffy gums
  • Receding gums
  • Gums that bleed easily while you floss or brush
  • Dusky red or dark red gums
  • Bad breath
  • Tender gums

Causes of Gingivitis

The most common cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene that encourages plaque to form on teeth, causing inflammation of the surrounding gum tissues. Other factors might increase your risk of gingivitis:

  • Smoking/tobacco use
  • Not fully removing plaque
  • Stress
  • Hormonal changes
  • Poor nutrition
  • Medications for several conditions may also affect oral health
  • Chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, and HIV

Treatment for gingivitis usually reverses symptoms and prevents the disease from progressing to more severe gum disease and tooth loss. When you combine a daily routine of good oral hygiene with tobacco use cessation, you have the best chance of successful treatment.

Professional gingivitis treatment includes the following:

  • Professional dental cleaning: Scaling and root planning will be part of your initial professional cleaning. Scaling removes tartar and bacteria from the surfaces of your teeth as well as beneath your gum line. Root planning removes inflammatory bacterial products, smooths the root surfaces, prevents tartar and bacteria buildup, and allows for proper healing.
  • Dental restoration, if needed: Misaligned teeth, as well as crowns, bridges, and other dental restorations that don't fit properly, can irritate your gums and make it difficult to remove plaque during daily oral hygiene. If your gingivitis is caused by problems with your teeth or dental restorations, your dentist may recommend addressing these issues.
  • Ongoing care: Gingivitis usually goes away after a professional cleaning, as long as you keep up with good oral hygiene at home. Your dentist will assist you in developing an effective at-home program as well as a schedule of professional cleanings and checkups.

Risk Factors of Gingivitis

Anyone can develop gingivitis however the risk is greater in the following :

  • Old age
  • Pregnant women
  • Smokers
  • Malnutrition
  • Vitamin C deficiency
  • Xerostomia
  • Hormonal changes
  • Use of birth control pills
  • Certain infections due to virus and fungi

Preventive Measures of Gingivitis

Gingivitis can be prevented by :

  • Maintaining good oral hygiene.
  • Visiting your dentist for regular checkups.
  • Managing your diabetes well to prevent damage to gums.
