A pilonidal cyst is an abnormally formed structure under the skin that resembles a pocket or a tunnel. It is normally filled with the debris of skin, hair, fluid, and pus. These can lead to the formation of cysts or abscesses. A pilonidal cyst is nearly always located at the top of the cleft of the buttocks, closer to the tailbone.
Pilonidal cysts usually occur when the hair is pricked and embedded in the skin. When a pilonidal cyst is infected, the resulting abscess is usually extremely painful. The cyst can be emptied by a small incision or may be removed surgically. Pilonidal cysts are more common in young men and the disease is recurring. People who sit for a long time, such as truck drivers, are at greater risk of developing a pilonidal cyst.
Pilonidal cysts are also called pilonidal sinus and are abbreviated as PNS. Timely diagnosis can treat the condition with antibiotics however if your sinus is recurring or if you have more than one cyst, a surgical procedure will be performed.
Early signs may be only a depression felt at the site. As soon as this cleavage becomes infected, the following symptoms can appear leading to the formation of the pilonidal cyst:
Pain
High Fever
Foul-smelling pus or blood oozing from the site
Inflammation
tenderness
Redness
Hair poking from the lesion
No definite cause of pilonidal cyst has been identified so far. The contributing factors mainly are:
Hormonal changes in puberty
Excessive hair growth at the site
Friction from the clothes and the environment due to continuous sitting. It can make hair grow back into the skin which elicits an immune reaction against these. As a result, there is the formation of a cyst at the site which becomes painful due to inflammation and pus formation.
The risk of this cyst is higher in men and young adults who sit for long stretches.
