Actinic keratosis (AK) is a skin disease characterized by rough, scaly patches of skin. Solar keratosis is another name for AK. It is a form of precancer, which indicates that it may progress to cancer if it is not treated. Without treatments, AK can evolve into squamous cell carcinoma, which is a kind of skin cancer.

Symptoms of Actinic Keratosis

The early symptoms of actinic keratosis are:

• Rough and raised lumps on the skin
• Lumps with yellow or brown crust on top
• Bumps of red, gray, pink, or skin color

Some other symptoms can be:

• Bleeding
• Itching, stinging or burning
• Lips with dry, scaly skin
• Skin growths that resemble animal horns and protrude from the skin
• Tenderness or pain

Causes of Actinic Keratosis

Actinic keratoses are caused as a result of abnormal skin cell development due to:

• DNA damage by short-wavelength UVB
• Poor immune function
• Aging
• Predisposing disease
• Certain drugs

Treatment

The treatments for AK might include:

• Medications 
• Cryotherapy
• Scraping 
• Laser therapy
• Photodynamic therapy

Preventive Measures of Actinic Keratosis

You take the following preventive measures to protect yourself from AK:

• Limit your exposure to the sun and avoid spending time in the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
• You must protect your skin by applying a sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30 even when it is cloudy.
• Wear tightly woven clothing that covers your arms and legs for additional solar protection.
