Summary about Cellulitis in English

Cellulitis is a skin condition that is both fairly common and could become increasingly serious. The skin area that falls under the infection reddens and swells up. This area is also usually painful to touch and is warmer than others.

Typically the main target areas are the lower legs. However, it could also show up on the face and arms as well as on other body parts. The main cause for its occurrence is the entry of bacteria through a crack in the skin.

If this infection is not treated timely, it could become deadly. Once it spreads to the bloodstream it might even prove fatal. However, one good thing is that this infection cannot be transmitted from one to the other.

Symptoms of Cellulitis

Cellulitis symptoms include:

  • A growing red area on the skin
  • Swelling
  • Increased sensitivity over the affected region
  • Feeling of pain
  • The skin area is warm to the touch
  • Fever outbreak
  • Red spots start forming
  • Blisters
  • The skin could also begin to dimple

Causes of Cellulitis

The identified cause for cellulitis is the streptococcus and/or staphylococcus entering the skin through a break in the surface. Staphylococcus is also increasingly causing another infection known as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) which is even more serious.

While it could appear on almost anywhere on the body, cellulitis most commonly appears on the leg’s lower region. Furthermore, as is stated above, the bacteria look for cracks in the skin such as those acquired after surgery, or any cuts, wounds, athlete’s foot, dermatitis and/or even an ulcer.

Cellulitis could also show up as a consequence of animal bites or stings. In fact, dry skin, especially the one that is flaky, is also a viable option for bacteria to enter through.

Risk Factors of Cellulitis

There are several risk factors for cellulitis. Injury is one primary risk factor simple for the reason that it provides an entry point for the bacteria. Certain skin ailments also put the individual at a higher risk of getting cellulitis. These conditions include shingles, athlete’s foot and eczema; all of these results in the skin breaking over multiple areas. An individual with a weak immune system is also at a higher risk than others. Several conditions could weaken the immune system and conversely raise the chances for cellulitis. Such ailments include diabetesand HIV/AIDS. Moreover, some treatment drugs might also weaken this system.

Another major risk factor is obesity or having a weight that is above the recommended weight. Another medical condition that could give way to cellulitis is lymphedema in which the arms or legs swell up. Lastly, there is the historical component; those who have had suffered cellulitis before are more likely to develop it again.

Preventive Measures of Cellulitis

The doctor recommends specific and preventive cellulitis antibiotics in order to fight cellulitis from appearing once again. In order to avoid its very first expression people are advised to wash whatever wounds they have, daily with water and soap. They should take care to be gentle.

Furthermore, experts recommend using a protective ointment along with a bandage that could properly cover the wound. One should also apply fresh bandages on a daily basis.

Types of Cellulitis

There are multiple types of cellulitis. The types are based on the area where the cellulitis shows up. These include:

  • Periorbital cellulitis. Cellulitis which occurs near or around the eye.
  • Facial cellulitis. This type shows up around the nose, cheek and eye area.
  • Breast cellulitis. As the name suggests, this condition occurs near or around the breast tissue.
  • Perianal cellulitis. The anal orifice is where this cellulitis occurs.

The most common region where cellulitis appears, however, is on the lower legs.
