Your grandma has Bells Palsy on the right side. This is caused by compression of her facial nerve. This is because the facial nerve that is the nerve to muscles of the face swells up due to viral infection. Due to the swelling there is not enough room and the nerve gets compressed. This paralyses the muscles of the affected side typically the muscles of eye closure and face so that she can’t blink or smile . Because of loss of blink reflex the eye is at risk of developing corneal ulcer and she should wear protective goggles. In the first week we can give steroids like Prednisolone to reduce the swelling of the nerve and that will gradually bring back the actions of blinking and smiling but if we delay then the paralysis can become permanent. Prednisolone is given in a reducing dose along with medication to protect the stomach lining like Nexium or Losec for ten days. Consult a neurologist because this condition is reversible but without treatment may become permanent.
