Talk to Dietitian/Nutritionist on Iron Deficiency

Hello, I have Alpha thalassemia and because of low iron I have bought ferrous fumarate and folic acid. why do doctors prescribe these two together? i was reading google articles and thought to ask some expert too. Also, i think we take it post meals (2 hours or so). Thank you :)
