Talk to Dietitian/Nutritionist on Want To Lower My Blood Pressure Through Lifestyle, Looking For A Structured Plan

Asking for Self, Female, 40 years old, Pakistan

Want to lower my blood pressure through lifestyle, looking for a structured plan

I'm a 40-year-old woman, 5'2", around 85 kg. I've been diagnosed with hypertension (readings as high as 190/110, often around 170/100). I've already seen a cardiologist, my ECG was normal and I was prescribed maintenance medication for the blood pressure.

I'll be honest: I haven't been consistent with the medication because I'd really like to manage this through diet, weight loss, and lifestyle change rather than relying on medicines long-term. This time I'm serious about committing to it properly.

A bit about my lifestyle: I don't smoke and I don't drink alcohol. Due to the nature of my work, I usually sleep quite late around 1 or 2am and get about 5 to 7 hours of sleep on weekdays, and 8 to 9 hours on weekends.

I'm looking for guidance on building a structured, sustainable program, ideally someone who can help me with diet and weight management while I work with my cardiologist on the medication side. Would a dietitian be the right fit for this, or should I have a consultation first? If yes, what lab reports I need to do? Recommendations welcome. Jazak Allah Khair.

As a dietitian, I can help you follow a structured lifestyle program alongside your cardiologist’s treatment. Since your blood pressure readings are very high, it is important to continue your prescribed medication while working on sustainable weight loss, a low sodium DASH style diet, regular physical activity, stress management, and improved sleep. Before starting, it is helpful to have recent lab reports including CBC, HbA1c, lipid profile, kidney function tests, thyroid profile, vitamin D, electrolytes, and urine analysis. Even a 5 to 10% weight loss can significantly improve blood pressure and overall heart health. With consistent nutrition, exercise, and medical follow up, many people see substantial improvements in blood pressure and may be able to reduce medication under their doctor’s supervision.
