What is the Blood Group & Rh Factor test?
A blood group test identifies which of the four ABO types your blood belongs to and whether you carry the Rh factor. Your type depends on which proteins, called antigens, sit on the surface of your red blood cells, and you inherit it from your parents. Your Blood Group Card Is Not a Substitute for Cross Matching
Worth saying plainly, because people carry these cards for decades and trust them absolutely.
Beyond A, B and Rh there are many other antigens on red blood cells, and routine blood grouping does not look for them. A person can react to donated blood even when the ABO and Rh types match correctly. This is why hospitals run a cross match, and a Coombs test where needed, before a transfusion rather than relying on a card or an old report. It is done in every case except a genuine emergency.

What Happens During the Test
