MedlinePlus states plainly that a calcium blood test does not tell you how much calcium is in your bones. Bone health is measured with a bone density scan, also called a DEXA scan, which measures mineral content in the bones themselves.

That is why the test is often ordered for a known condition rather than for symptoms, including kidney disease, thyroid or parathyroid disease, malnutrition, problems absorbing calcium, and certain cancers.

MedlinePlus is clear that a result outside the normal range does not always mean a condition needing treatment, because diet and certain medicines affect calcium levels.
