Summary about Blastomycosis in English

Blastomycosis is a fungal infection caused by a special type of fungus known as Blastomyces. The infection cause flu or lungs infections like symptoms that includes fever, cough, sneezing, headache, muscle aches, chills, etc. The prognosis of blastomycosis is variable; most patients recover easily, but immunocompromised patients have a prognosis that can vary from good to poor. The disease is caused by inhaling the spores of the fungus.

The Blastomyces fungus grow in damp places usually in wood or soil.
The infection should be treated by the health professional and follow-up is very important in this case, as the chances of reinfection are there.
The fungi can infect humans and animals (for example, dogs, cats, bats, lions, horses) and cause blastomycosis in them.

In severe cases, skin lesions can be seen and other body organs are also affected by the infection.

Causes of Blastomycosis

Different types of fungi are responsible for different type of blastomycosis;

  • Blastomyces dermatitidis
  • Paracoccidioides brasiliensis

Preventive Measures of Blastomycosis

The treatment of blastomycosis is done with different types of prescription antifungal medications. Itraconazole is the antifungal drug that is used to treat blastomycosis. Medical treatment is done with long-term (six to 12 months) antifungal drugs. Sometimes, the symptoms of blastomycosis go away on their own without the treatment. But if the symptoms prevail and progress from lungs to the whole body, then blastomycosis needs treatment.

There are two other categories in which Blastomycosis is divided into;

Pulmonary Blastomycosis:

If the infection affects the lungs, it is known as pulmonary blastomycosis.
