The originating area for liver cancer is the liver itself. While it definitely happens that some cancers that started elsewhere might grow to encompass the liver region, liver cancers are specifically named when they start in the liver.

The liver is a large and essential body organ. Situated beneath the right lung, it is responsible for many important activities such as toxin removal.

Symptoms of Liver Cancer

Where the cancer is largely determines what kind of liver cancer symptoms are displayed or experienced. Jaundice also might cause certain symptoms, including itching.

Normally, the person could perceive the liver cancer symptoms as not serious. This is because they usually consist of general sick feelings or appetite loss.

In its initial stages, liver cancer rarely shows any signs or symptoms. The symptoms gradually appear in the following forms:

• The individual loses weight
• Jaundice manifests and makes the skin and eye whites yellow.
• The person feels an itchy feeling
• They might also feel as if they are ill
• Their abdomen also swells up
• The individual rarely feels hungry and usually does not eat more than a few morsels
• The right shoulder or the abdomen could experience pain

Causes of Liver Cancer

While liver cancer causes are yet not properly identifiable, most experts attribute it to the liver scarring in a condition called cirrhosis. Hepatitis C is a causal factor that many survey have identified as the chief causal factor of liver cancer.

Not only hepatitis C, but hepatitis B also is a causal factor, as observed by many scientists and doctors. The reason is that both diseases potentially lead to liver scarring, which in turn can cause liver cancer.

In fact, any other liver disease which could scar the liver could potentially cause liver cancer to appear and develop.

Risk Factors of Liver Cancer

Liver cancer risk factors include:

• The individual having a long-term hepatitis B and/or C. While hepatitis C is an important factor because it can scar the liver, hepatitis B can cause the cancer without that.
• Drinking alcohol excessively.
• Obesity and diabetes also greatly raise one’s vulnerability to liver cancer. This is so because both conditions are linked to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease which itself is a risk factor for liver cancer.
• Liver autoimmune disorders like PBC and some other genetically passed down diseases.

Preventive Measures of Liver Cancer

Steps to reduce the risk of liver cancer include: In order to prevent liver cancer, one should pay regular visits to a doctor who has a specialty in liver disorders. One should also get themselves vaccinated for hepatitis A and B after consulting with their doctor. Hepatitis B and C both should be avoided.

If the person already has cirrhosis, he/she should consult the doctor and act through his/her recommendations for any treatments. They should also consult the doctor about any screening processes.

In the case of an obese or overweight person, or anyone suffering from alcohol abuse disorder or diabetes, they should consult their doctors.

Types of Liver Cancer

Researchers have identified five main liver cancer types. The cells in which the cancer starts in largely determines the liver cancer type.

• Hepatocellular carcinoma. This is the most common liver cancer type. Experts also call it hepatoma in simple terms.
• Fibrolamellar carcinoma. This is a very rarely occurring hepatoma subtype and usually starts in 20 year olds or 30 year olds. It also happens without cirrhosis.
• Cholangiocarcinoma. As the name suggests (cholangio means ‘bile ducts’) this liver cancer occurs in bile ducts.
• Angiosarcoma. Also called ‘haemangiosarcoma’, angiosarcoma is another liver cancer type.
• Hepatoblastoma. This liver cancer is quite rare and typically occurs in kids.
