Most newborns lose weight in first week or so only to gain it later. Offer a formula feed with a cup and spoon after breastfeeding your son. If he takes it, continue giving the formula with cup and spoon after breastfeeds until later becomes fully established. Avoid bottle feeding as the baby might give up mother feed. Do not give water as breast or formula feeds are 83 percent water and the babies do not need any.

Cow’s milk is different from mother’s milk and has to undergo modifications as a formula milk to make it closer to mother’s milk. It is not recommended under one year of age as suggested by my learned colleague.

Make 2 or 3 ounces of formula feed strictly according to instructions by the manufacturer. Offer it each time after the breastfeeding is complete, with a cup and spoon. Avoid using a feeding bottle. You will come to know how much baby needs as it depends on the feed he has taken on breast and how hungry he still is. Stop this top feed as soon as breastfeeds become sufficient for the baby. If a mother remains relaxed and willing to feed herself, she will produce milk enough for her baby. She should take a balanced diet and enough fluids, however.
