Talk to Pediatrician on Vitamin D Deficiency In 7-year-old Daughter - Daily Dosage

person-avatar

Asking For Other, Female 7, karachi

Dear Doctor,

My 7-year-old daughter, weigh 15 kg, has been diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency, with a level of 14.1. Our pediatrician initially suggested a single dose of 20,000 IU, but my daughter is not tolerating high doses well getting stomach upset, Diarrhea and mouth sore.

Could you please recommend a suitable daily dosage of vitamin D that can help achieve the target levels without causing any adverse effects? Specifically, I'd like to know

Daily dosage What is a safe and effective daily dose of vitamin D for my daughter, considering her weight and deficiency level?

Brand recommendation Are there any reputable brands that you would recommend for vitamin D supplements for children?

Duration How long would my daughter need to take the daily dosage to achieve the target vitamin D levels?

Looking forward to your expert advice

Thank you!

There are multiple things which need to be addressed . 1. For a 7 years old girl 15 kg is too less for her age. 2. There is need to work on her diet 3. Concentrate on vit D rich food and add to her diet 4. After summer try to encourage her outdoor playing time and decrease screen time if she is having 5. U can add any Vit D drops 1-2 drops can make her daily requirement which is 400 a 600 U per day, but it’s better to work on diet rather than drops

National institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) UK, recommend 10,000 IU for 12 weeks followed by 400 IU to continue for years and years. This dose will not cause any side effects. The brand available in Pakistan are, 1). In drop D capsule, 10,000 IU once a day ( if she can swallow), 2). One-D tablets, 10,000 IU. 3)Vit-D max or ORA-D drops, 400 IU, one drop once a day. Alternatively give 2lac unit Indrop D orally mixed with 1tbsp milk OD for three days and then follow the above instructions as a maintenance dose. If needs further clarification, please book video consultation with me.

Answer to your question 1. Capsule Indrop-D 10,000 IU once a day for 3 months. After that, 2. ORA-D drops, 400 IU 1-2 drops daily for at least 1 year. If any confusion, please make online videos consultation
