HbA1c is a blood test that shows your average blood sugar over the past 3 months in a single number. A finger prick sugar reading tells you what your sugar is doing this minute. HbA1c tells you what it has been doing since roughly the start of the season.

It works because glucose sticks to the haemoglobin inside your red blood cells. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases explains that the more glucose there is in your blood, the more of it attaches, and the test measures how much haemoglobin is carrying glucose. The result comes back as a percentage.

HbA1c, A1c and the 3 Month Sugar Test: The Same Test

What the Test Measures

Because it averages, one bad week does not ruin the number, and one good day before the test does not fix it. That is the point of it.

HbA1c Normal Range

NIDDK sets out the diagnostic bands as follows. Any result used to diagnose diabetes needs a second confirming test unless the symptoms are already clear.

Within the prediabetes band, the higher the number, the greater the chance of going on to develop type 2 diabetes. If you already have diabetes, your doctor sets a personal target. Who Should Get Tested and When

• If you have diabetes, at least twice a year, and more often if you are not meeting your target

• If you have risk factors for type 2 diabetes, ask your doctor whether you should be tested
• If you are pregnant, note that the glucose challenge or tolerance test is used for gestational diabetes, not HbA1c

• If your doctor has also ordered a fasting sugar or a lipid profile, fast for those instead
