What is the Lipid Profile test?
A lipid profile is a single blood test that measures the fats circulating in your blood. One sample gives your doctor four numbers: total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides. Together these numbers say a lot about the health of your arteries, and they are the main thing a doctor looks at before deciding whether you need a change in diet, a change in activity, or medicine.
You cannot feel high cholesterol. There is no headache, no pain and no warning sign in most people. That is the whole reason this test exists.
Cholesterol Test and Lipid Profile: The Same Test
If your doctor wrote "cholesterol test" on the slip, this is the test they meant. In Pakistan the same panel is booked under several names: cholesterol test, cholesterol profile, fasting lipid profile, FLP, or simply LP. Some labs write "Lipid Profile (Fasting)". They all measure the same four markers.
You can also book the parts on their own. A single cholesterol reading tells you far less than the full panel, because a good total cholesterol number can still hide a low HDL or a high triglyceride level. Most doctors ask for the full profile for this reason.
What the Test Measures
Your report will list four main values, and sometimes a fifth calculated one.
| Marker | What it is | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Total cholesterol | All the cholesterol in your blood | A broad first look, but never read alone |
| LDL cholesterol | The "bad" cholesterol | The main source of fatty buildup inside artery walls |
| HDL cholesterol | The "good" cholesterol | Helps clear cholesterol away from the arteries |
| Triglycerides | Another type of fat in blood | Rises with sugar, refined carbohydrates and alcohol |
| Non HDL cholesterol | Total cholesterol minus HDL | A calculated number many doctors now prefer |
Normal Range
Reference bands vary slightly between labs, so read the range printed on your own report first. These are the values most commonly used.
| Marker | Healthy range |
|---|---|
| Total cholesterol | Below 200 mg/dL |
| LDL | Below 100 mg/dL |
| HDL | 40 mg/dL or above for men, 50 mg/dL or above for women |
| Triglycerides | Below 150 mg/dL |
| Non HDL cholesterol | Below 130 mg/dL |
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute sets the goal for a healthy profile as non HDL cholesterol below 130 mg/dL with HDL of at least 40 mg/dL for men and 50 mg/dL for women.
What High and Low Values Mean
One value outside the range confirms nothing on its own. Your doctor reads the four numbers together, alongside your weight, blood pressure, sugar and family history.
| Finding | What it may suggest |
|---|---|
| High LDL | More fatty buildup in the arteries over time, raising heart and stroke risk |
| Low HDL | Less protection against that buildup, common with inactivity and smoking |
| High triglycerides | Often linked to excess sugar, refined carbohydrates, alcohol or uncontrolled diabetes |
| High total cholesterol | Needs the breakdown before it means anything, since it can rise from a high HDL too |
| Very low readings | Rarely a concern on their own, but can appear with thyroid or liver problems |
Who Should Get Tested and When
Because high cholesterol is silent, testing is based on age and risk rather than symptoms. The NHLBI screening guide runs as follows.
- Adults aged 20 to 65: every 5 years
- Men aged 45 to 65 and women aged 55 to 65: every 1 to 2 years
- Adults over 65: every year
- Children: from ages 9 to 11, earlier if there is a family history of high cholesterol or early heart disease
Test sooner if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, a family history of heart attack or stroke, if you smoke, or if you carry extra weight around the waist.
How to Prepare
- Fast for 8 to 12 hours before the sample when your doctor asks for a fasting profile
- Water is allowed and encouraged during the fast
- Take your regular medicines unless your doctor tells you otherwise
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before, since it pushes triglycerides up sharply
- Tell the phlebotomist if you are pregnant or recently unwell, as both can shift the numbers
What Happens During the Test
- A trained phlebotomist draws a small blood sample from a vein in your arm
- The draw itself takes under a minute
- You may feel a brief sting and see a small bruise afterwards
- You can eat straight away once the sample is taken
- Your Marham Lab report is ready the same day and reaches you online
Conditions It Can Help Detect
A lipid profile is a screening test for cardiovascular risk, not a diagnosis. Raised blood lipids are one of the measurable risk factors that point to a higher chance of heart attack, stroke and heart failure, according to the World Health Organization, which records 19.8 million deaths from cardiovascular disease in 2022 and notes that over three quarters of them occur in low and middle income countries.
The test also supports the follow up of diabetes, thyroid disease, kidney disease and liver disease, all of which can change your lipid numbers. Only a doctor can tell you what your particular results mean.

Final Thoughts
A lipid profile is one of the cheapest and fastest ways to find a risk you cannot feel. If you are over 20 and have never had one, or your last one was more than five years ago, it is worth booking. Take the report to your doctor rather than reading it alone, because the four numbers only make sense together and alongside the rest of your health.
