Urine sampleReport: Same dayNo fasting needed

A urine test costs PKR 385 at Marham Lab, down from PKR 550. The urine C/E, also written urine R/E or urine routine examination, checks your urine in three ways: how it looks, what a dipstick detects, and what shows under the microscope. Doctors use it to look into urine infection, kidney problems and diabetes. No fasting is needed and your report is ready the same day.

What is the Urine for C/E test?

A urine C/E is the standard urine test. MedlinePlus describes urinalysis as a physical, chemical and microscopic examination of urine, which is exactly what the three sections on your report represent.

It is one of the cheapest tests a lab offers and one of the most informative, because urine carries evidence from the kidneys, the bladder and the bloodstream all at once.

Urine C/E, Urine R/E and Urinalysis: The Same Test

If your slip says urine C/E, urine R/E, urine routine examination, urine complete examination or urinalysis, it is one test. Pakistani labs use all of these, and C/E and R/E appear on reports interchangeably.

It is not the same as a urine C/S, which is a urine culture. That is a separate and more expensive test, and the difference matters if you are being treated for an infection. There is a section on that below.

What the Test Checks

Part of the testWhat it looks at
PhysicalThe colour of your urine and whether it is clear or cloudy
ChemicalA dipstick reads protein, glucose, ketones, blood, bilirubin, pH and specific gravity
MicroscopicCells, crystals, casts, mucus and bacteria seen under the microscope

Your doctor reads the three together. Cloudy urine on its own means little; cloudy urine with white cells and nitrites on the dipstick tells a much clearer story.

What a Normal Report Looks Like

Normal urine ranges from almost colourless to dark yellow, and MedlinePlus notes that some foods, beetroot and blackberries among them, can turn it red without anything being wrong.

Glucose, ketones, protein and bilirubin are not normally detectable. Haemoglobin, nitrites, red blood cells and white blood cells are not normally found either. Laboratories differ slightly in how they report and measure, so read the values printed on your own report.

What Abnormal Results May Mean

FindingWhat it may point to
White cells, nitrites, bacteriaA urinary tract infection
ProteinKidney disease, which is why this test is used alongside a renal function panel
GlucoseDiabetes that is not well controlled
Blood or red cellsInfection, stones, or something that needs investigating properly
KetonesThe body burning fat for fuel, seen in uncontrolled diabetes and in prolonged fasting

MedlinePlus lists kidney disease, urinary tract infection, kidney stones, poorly controlled diabetes and bladder or kidney cancer among the conditions abnormal results can point to. That range is exactly why the result belongs with a doctor rather than being read alone.

If You Are Already Taking a Sachet for a Urine Infection

This is worth saying plainly, because it is the most common pattern we see.

A burning, urgent, painful urination usually gets treated at home first, with an alkalising sachet or syrup from the pharmacy. Those products can ease the burning by making urine less acidic. They do not treat an infection, and they do not tell you whether you have one.

A urine C/E is the test that answers that question, and it costs PKR 385. If the report suggests an infection, the next step is usually a urine culture, which identifies the organism and shows which antibiotic will work on it. Taking sachets for weeks while an actual infection continues is how a simple bladder infection climbs to the kidneys.

Who Should Get Tested

  • Burning, pain or urgency when passing urine
  • Passing urine much more often than usual, or much less
  • Cloudy, dark, foamy or bad smelling urine
  • Blood in the urine
  • Pain in the lower abdomen, side or back
  • Fever with any of the above
  • As part of a routine check, or to monitor diabetes or kidney disease
  • In pregnancy, on the schedule your doctor sets

How to Prepare and How to Give the Sample

The quality of the sample decides the quality of the result, and most bad reports come from bad collection.

  • No fasting is needed
  • Use the clean catch method. Clean the area first, begin passing urine into the toilet, then collect the middle part of the stream in the container
  • The first urine of the morning is usually the most concentrated and the most useful
  • Use the sterile container the lab provides rather than any bottle from home
  • Get the sample to the lab quickly, or ask about refrigerating it if there will be a delay
  • Women should tell the lab if they are on their period, since blood in the sample changes the result
  • Tell your doctor about your medicines. MedlinePlus notes that several, including iron supplements, nitrofurantoin, phenazopyridine, riboflavin, phenytoin and chloroquine, can change the colour of urine without anything being wrong

What a Urine C/E Cannot Tell You

It can suggest an infection. It cannot name the organism causing it, and it cannot tell your doctor which antibiotic will clear it.

That is what a urine culture does, and at Marham Lab a urine C/S is PKR 1,890. Do not start or change an antibiotic on the strength of a C/E alone. Taking the wrong antibiotic, or the right one for too short a time, is a large part of why resistant urinary infections are now so common.

Final Thoughts

For 385 rupees this test answers a question most people guess at for weeks. If passing urine hurts, or your urine has changed colour or smell, get the test before you get the sachet. And if the report suggests an infection, let a doctor decide the antibiotic on the back of a culture rather than on the back of a guess.

Frequently asked questions

At Marham Lab a urine C/E is PKR 385, reduced from PKR 550, and the rate is the same in every city. Home sample collection is currently available in Lahore only, so patients elsewhere book a lab visit. A urine culture, which is the follow up test when an infection is suspected, is PKR 1,890.

Yes. Urine C/E, urine R/E, urine routine examination, urine complete examination and urinalysis all describe the same test. C stands for complete and R for routine, and Pakistani labs use the two interchangeably on slips and reports. If any of them appears on your prescription, this is the test.

Use the clean catch method, which gives the most reliable result. Clean the area first, start passing urine into the toilet, then collect the middle part of the stream in the sterile container the lab gives you. The first urine of the morning is usually best because it is the most concentrated. Get the sample to the lab quickly, and tell the lab if you are on your period, since blood in the sample changes what the report shows.

It points to one, but it does not confirm which organism is causing it. A urine C/E can show white cells, nitrites and bacteria, which together suggest an infection. A urine culture, or urine C/S, grows the organism and shows which antibiotic works against it, and that is PKR 1,890 at Marham Lab. Antibiotics should be chosen on a culture where possible rather than on a C/E alone.
