Boils and carbuncles are painful, pus-filled bumps that form under the skin when bacteria infect and inflame one or more of their hair follicles. Boils usually start with red, tender bumps. The clumps fill quickly with pus, they enlarge and become more painful until they tear and drip. A carbuncle is an accumulation of boils that form an area of contiguous infection under the skin. This usually occurs in the hairy area behind the neck but may also affect other areas like buttocks, thighs, and armpits. Do not try to cut or squeeze it as this may spread the infection.
This infection mostly caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. This is a contagious infection and may pass from one person to another.
