Seborrheic keratosis is one of the most common non-cancerous skin tumors in the elderly. A seborrheic keratosis usually develops as a brown, black or slightly tanned growth on the face, chest, shoulders or back. The growth has a waxy, flaky and slightly elevated appearance. Seborrheic keratoses are not cancerous and unrelated to sunlight but may be similar to skin cancer. Seborrheic keratoses are usually painless and require no treatment. You may decide to remove them if they are irritated by clothing or for cosmetic reasons. The growth has a waxy and scaly appearance.
