What you are describing is congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (blocked tear duct), which is quite common in infants. This condition typically resolves on its own as the tear duct often opens up naturally by 12 months of age. Continue performing tear duct massage exercises as it can help in clearing the blockage. If the symptoms persist, the discharge becomes more frequent or yellowish (indicating infection), or if there’s significant swelling or discomfort, it’s advisable to consult a pediatrician or pediatric ophthalmologist. Topical antibiotic eye drops will be prescribed or in rare cases, a minor procedure to open the duct. Dr. Raza (MD USA).
