Bulimia nervosa is a severe and potentially fatal eating disorder. Bulimics may binge eat a large amount of food without control and then purge, attempting to get rid of the extra calories in an unhealthy way. People with Bulimia may employ various techniques to burn calories and avoid weight gain. After bingeing, for example, you may self-induce vomiting or abuse laxatives, weight-loss supplements, or diuretics. Alternatively, you can use other methods to burn calories and avoid weight gain, such as fasting, strict dieting, or excessive exercise.

According to the data from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the percentage of eating disorders has increased from 3.4% to 7.8% worldwide in the last two decades. The facts and statistics for eating disorders in Pakistan have been given below:

Symptoms of Bulimia Nervosa

Following are the symptoms of bulimia nervosa:

• Obsessing over your body's shape and weight
• Fearful of putting on weight
• Eating abnormally large amounts of food in one sitting regularly
• Feeling out of control, as if you can't stop eating or control what you eat.
• Forcing yourself to vomit or exercise excessively.
• Using laxatives, diuretics, or enemas after you eat.
• Excessive use of dietary supplements or herbal products for weight loss

The number of times you deliberately vomit each week, usually at least once a week for at least three months, determines the severity of Bulimia.

Causes of Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia's exact cause is unknown. Genetics, biology, emotional health, societal expectations, and other factors could all play a role in developing eating disorders.

Preventive Measures of Bulimia Nervosa

Preventive measures for inducing Bulimia are as follows:

• Encourage and reinforce a positive body image in your children, regardless of size or shape. Assist them in developing confidence in areas other than their physical appearance.
• Maintain a regular schedule of enjoyable family meals.
• When you're at home, don't bring up the subject of weight. Instead, concentrate on leading a healthy lifestyle.
• Encourage people to avoid dieting, especially when it involves unhealthy weight-loss methods like fasting, using weight-loss supplements or laxatives, or self-induced vomiting.
• Consider supportively talking to a relative or friend who appears to have food issues that could lead to or indicate an eating disorder about these issues and asking how you can help.

Treatment for Bulimia Nervosa:

Bulimia can be treated in a variety of ways, but combining psychotherapy and antidepressants may be the most effective way to overcome the disorder. Treatment usually entails a collaborative effort involving you, your family, your primary care provider, a mental health professional, and an eating disorder dietitian.
