Heavy bleeding is not directly related to age, but there are times in our lives when we are more inclined, and hormonal changes occur. Adolescents females who have just started menstruating and who are just before menopause are prime examples. Menstruation can change in the thirties days. This can be a shock, especially if you have always been light enough.

Menorrhagia is the medical term for menstruation with abnormally frequent or prolonged bleeding. Although heavy menstrual bleeding is a common problem, most women do not suffer from a blood loss severe enough to be called menorrhagia. In menorrhagia, you can not maintain your usual activities during your menstrual period because you have a lot of blood loss and cramps. If you are afraid of your period because you have frequent menstrual bleeding, consult your doctor. There are many effective treatments for menorrhagia.

Signs and symptoms of menorrhagia may include:

• Soaking through one or more sanitary pads within three hours
• Need to use double sanitary protection to control menstrual flow
• Need to wake up at night to change sanitary protection
• Bleeding longer than a week
• Passing blood clots larger than a quarter

This is a dangerous condition as it may lead to anemia, fatigue, and shortness of breath. Mostly it is treated by medication or hormonal therapy.
