How can I find treatment of Malnutrition?

Malnutrition means getting too little or too much of certain nutrients. It includes undernutrition, when your body doesn’t get enough protein, calories, vitamins or minerals, and overnutrition, when you eat more than your body needs, which usually leads to overweight or obesity. Malnutrition can affect growth, energy, immunity and long-term health, and children, pregnant women and older adults are most at risk. With the right diet, nutritional support and medical advice, malnutrition can be treated and prevented.

What is Malnutrition?

Malnutrition is often thought of as only being underweight, but a person can be overweight and still lack important vitamins and minerals, because many high-calorie processed foods are low in nutrients.

Malnutrition is a global problem. The World Health Organization estimates that over 460 million adults and 150 million children are undernourished, while more than two billion adults and children are overweight or obese. People in Southern Asia, including Pakistan, are among those most affected by undernutrition.

Types of Malnutrition

1. Undernutrition

Undernutrition happens when you don’t get enough protein, calories or micronutrients. It shows up in three main ways:

  • Wasting: low weight for height, usually due to recent, severe weight loss. This is also called acute malnutrition.

  • Stunting: low height for age, due to long-term undernutrition

  • Underweight: low weight for age

2. Protein-Energy Malnutrition

Protein-energy malnutrition is a severe form of undernutrition. Its two main forms are:

  • Kwashiorkor: a severe lack of protein, causing fluid retention and a swollen, protruding abdomen

  • Marasmus: a severe lack of calories, causing extreme wasting and major loss of fat and muscle

3. Micronutrient Deficiencies

These happen when the body lacks specific vitamins or minerals, such as iron, zinc, vitamin A or iodine, even if the person eats enough calories.

4. Overnutrition

Overnutrition means getting too much protein, calories or fat, which leads to overweight and obesity. It can exist alongside vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Symptoms of Malnutrition

Common symptoms of undernutrition:

  • Weight loss

  • Loss of fat and muscle

  • Hollow cheeks and sunken eyes

  • A swollen stomach

  • Dry hair and skin

  • Slow wound healing

  • Tiredness

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Irritability, depression or anxiety

Symptoms of specific deficiencies:

  • Vitamin A: dry eyes, night blindness and more frequent infections

  • Zinc: poor appetite, stunted growth, slow healing, hair loss and diarrhoea

  • Iron: poor brain function, difficulty regulating body temperature and stomach problems

  • Iodine: an enlarged thyroid (goitre), and problems with growth and development

Malnutrition in Children and Infants

Infant malnutrition and malnutrition in children mainly affect growth. Children may be too short for their age (stunting) or too thin for their height (wasting). Stunting, wasting and zinc and vitamin A deficiencies have been linked to up to 45% of child deaths worldwide. Children who were undernourished early in life also have a higher risk of obesity, heart disease and diabetes later on.

Causes of Malnutrition

Common causes of malnutrition include:

  • Digestive and absorption problems: conditions such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease and bacterial overgrowth in the intestines stop the body from absorbing nutrients properly

  • Heavy alcohol use

  • Depression and other mental health conditions, which can reduce appetite

  • Frailty and poor mobility, especially in older adults

  • Frequent fast food and processed food, which is linked to overnutrition

Risk Factors of Malnutrition

You may be at higher risk of malnutrition if you are:

  • A child

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Living on a low income or in poverty

  • Living in an area with limited access to food

  • An older adult, especially living alone or with a disability

  • Living with a digestive disease such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. People with these conditions may be up to four times more likely to be malnourished.

Preventive Measures of Malnutrition

To prevent malnutrition:

  • Eat a varied diet with enough carbohydrates, protein, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals and water

  • Include iron, zinc and iodine-rich foods, or supplements if your doctor recommends them

  • Make sure pregnant and breastfeeding women get extra nutritional support

  • Monitor children’s growth with regular check-ups

  • Limit fast food and processed food to prevent overnutrition

  • Stay physically active

  • Get digestive problems treated early

Diagnosis of Malnutrition

To diagnose malnutrition, your doctor may:

  • Check your weight and any recent weight loss

  • Calculate your body mass index (BMI)

  • In children, compare weight and height against standard growth charts for their age

  • Do a physical exam to look for signs such as muscle loss or swelling

  • Order blood tests to check vitamin and mineral levels

  • Use a screening tool such as MUST (Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool)

Treatment of Malnutrition

Malnutrition treatment depends on the type, its cause and how severe it is. Your doctor will usually:

  • Assess your nutritional needs

  • Refer you to a dietitian or nutritionist, who will create a feeding plan suited to you

  • Recommend nutritional supplements if needed

  • Treat any underlying cause, such as a digestive disease

  • Monitor your weight and progress with regular follow-ups

Severe malnutrition, especially in children, needs medical supervision.

Complications of Malnutrition

If not treated, malnutrition can lead to:

  • Weak immunity and frequent infections

  • Poor growth and development in children

  • Higher risk of obesity, heart disease and diabetes later in life for children who were undernourished

  • High blood pressure in teenagers who were stunted

  • Type 2 diabetes and heart disease in children who are obese

  • A higher risk of death in severe undernutrition
