Summary about Seborrheic Eczema in English

Seborrheic eczema or Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin disorder that primarily affects the scalp. It causes scaly patches, red skin, and unruly dandruff. Seborrheic dermatitis can also affect fatty body areas such as the face, nose, eyebrows, ears, eyelids and chest area. Seborrheic dermatitis can disappear without treatment. You may also need many repeated treatments before the symptoms disappear. And they can come back later. Daily cleansing with mild soap and shampoo can reduce the feeling of fat and the formation of dead skin. Seborrheic dermatitis is also known as dandruff. In babies, the disease is called a cradle cap and causes scaly patches on the scalp.

It is diagnosed by following signs and symptoms

• Dandruff on the scalp, hair, eyebrows, beard or mustache
• Patches of greasy skin covered with flaky white scales
• Red skin
• Itching

Symptoms of Seborrheic Eczema

The symptoms are:

• itchy flakes on the scalp
• scales on the skin, usually red
• cradle cap; yellow, crusty scales on infant’s head
• redness around the eyelids, typically itchy
• thick and itchy scales on both sides of the face
• patches of flakes on scalp or chest, sometimes in the shape of a petal or ring
• redness in body creases, such as beneath the breasts, folds of armpits, and genitals

Causes of Seborrheic Eczema

The causes of seborrheic eczema are:

• increased androgen hormone
• increased skin lipids
• inflammatory reaction
• genetic predisposition
• stress
• oily skin
• climate changes

Treatment

The treatment for seborrheic eczema is:

• antifungal medication
• over-the-counter ointments
• combination of psoralen and light therapy
• Metronidazole, an antibacterial treatment

Preventive Measures of Seborrheic Eczema

Following are the preventive measures for seborrheic eczema:

• avoid styling products
• avoid skincare or haircare products with alcohol in them
