Summary about Tinea Versicolor in English

The fungal infection in the skin is called tinea versicolor. The fungus alters the normal pigmentation of the skin and leads to small discolored spots. These spots may be lighter or darker than the surrounding skin and most often affect the trunk and shoulders. In young adults and adolescents, this disease is more common. Exposure to the sun can clarify the tinea versicolor. Tinea versicolor, also called pityriasis versicolor, is neither painful nor contagious. However, this can lead to emotional stress and poor self-esteem.

Anti-fungal creams, lotions, or shampoos can help in treatment. But even after successful treatment, the skin color may remain uneven for several weeks or even months. Tinea versicolor is very common, especially in hot, humid climates. It is manifested by the following signs and symptoms

  • Patches of skin discoloration
  • Mild itching
  • Scaling

Antifungal creams, lotions, or shampoos are used to treat this fungal infection. But the successful treatment is not a surety to regaining the actual skin color again as discolored patches may persist forever.

Symptoms of Tinea Versicolor

The most visible symptom is discolored patches of skin, which typically appear on the arms, chest, neck, or back. These patches could be:

  • pink, red, tan, or brown
  • dry, itchy, and scaly
  • more prominent with tanning
  • prone to disappear in cooler, less humid weather
  • skin discoloration, most commonly seen on the face, neck, chest, and abdomen.
  • patches of discoloration can appear anywhere on your body
  • sweating excessively

Causes of Tinea Versicolor

Tinea versicolor develops when Malassezia proliferates rapidly on the skin's surface. Some factors that may encourage the growth of this yeast on the skin include:

  • An overgrowth of yeast on the skin's surface.
  • Naturally occurring yeast may grow in small colonies on your skin if it is warm, moist, and oily enough.
  • Tinea versicolor symptoms are caused by yeast colonies.

Treatment

Antifungal medications are used to treat tinea versicolor by doctors. A topical antifungal medication, such as ketoconazole, may be prescribed by your doctor. This will be applied to the affected areas of your skin as a cream or wash. If your symptoms are severe, your doctor may also prescribe fluconazole, an oral antifungal.

Preventive Measures of Tinea Versicolor

Following are the ways to prevent tinea versicolor:

  • good skin hygiene
  • drying your skin after bathing
  • consulting a doctor immediately if you see any discoloration on your skin
