Summary about Malaria in English

Malaria is a disease caused by a parasite. The parasite is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. People with malaria usually feel very ill, have high fever and chills. Every year, around 210 million people suffer from malaria and around 440,000 people die of it. Most people who die from this disease are young children in Africa.

Although the disease is rare in temperate climates, malaria is still prevalent in tropical and subtropical countries. Health authorities around the world are trying to reduce the incidence of malaria by distributing mosquito nets to protect people from mosquito bites while they sleep. Scientists from all over the world are working on the development of a vaccine against malaria. When traveling to places where malaria is common, take mosquito bite protection measures by wearing protective clothing, insect repellents and sleeping under treated bed nets. Many malaria parasites are now resistant to the drugs most commonly used to treat the disease.

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by parasitic protozoa and spread by the bite of female Anopheles mosquito.  Special antimalarial drugs are prescribed for treatment.

Symptoms of Malaria

Malaria causes symptoms that typically include

  • Fever
  • Tiredness
  • Vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Yellowing of skin
  • Seizures
  • Coma

These symptoms begin after ten to fifteen days of the mosquito bite.

Causes of Malaria

This is a mosquito-borne disease that spreads by the bite of the infected female anopheles mosquito. It does not spread from the affected person to another person but can be passed from mother to baby, by sharing infected instruments and by blood transfusion as well.

Risk Factors of Malaria

People living in congested poorly drained locations that harbor mosquitoes and those IV drug users that share syringes are at an increased risk of catching malaria.

Preventive Measures of Malaria

Avoid unsafe blood transfusion, use only sterile disposable syringes and use of mosquito repellants can help to stay safe from malaria.
