Summary about Cutaneous Candidiasis in English

Cutaneous candidiasis and other forms of candidiasis are infections caused by Candida albicans yeast or other Candida species. Yeasts are one-celled fungi that normally reproduce at birth, a process involving the progeny of the parent cell. C albicans, the main infectious agent in human, is an oval yeast with a diameter of 2 to 6 μm. C-albicans (as well as most mushrooms of medical importance) may exist as hyphae or yeasts (called dimorphism). If the punctured cells do not separate, a cell chain is created and called pseudohyphae.

Cutaneous means, “skin” and candidiasis is projecting to the infection caused by the specified fungi.
It is a very common fungal infection that may affect all of the skin but the warm and moist areas are more vulnerable to this infection such as; armpits and groin. Superficial infections of the skin and mucous membranes are the most common types of skin infections caused by candidiasis. The most common types of skin infections caused by candida are intertrigo, diaper rash, erosion interdigitalis blastomycetica, perianal dermatitis, and candidal balanitis.

Symptoms of Cutaneous Candidiasis

  • A rash is the most common symptom of candidiasis of the skin. The inflammation frequently causes redness and severe itching. In some cases, the infection can cause cracked and sore skin.
  • Blisters and pustules are also possible.
  • The rash can come anywhere on the body, but it is most likely in the skin folds. This includes the armpits, groin, under breasts, and between the fingers.
  • Candida causes infections in the nails, nail edges, and mouth corners.
  • Other skin conditions that may resemble candidiasis include:
  • Ringworm
  • Shives
  • Diabetes-related skin conditions caused by herpes
  • Dermatitis due to contact
  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis

Causes of Cutaneous Candidiasis

Candidiasis of the skin develops when Candida infects the skin. Candida fungi are naturally present on the skin. However, when this type of fungus multiplies uncontrollably, it can cause an infection. This could happen as a result of:

  • Tight clothing for warm weather
  • A lack of hygiene
  • Obesity, infrequent undergarment changes, and the use of antibiotics that kill harmless bacteria that keep Candida at bay
  • The use of corticosteroids or other immune-suppressing medications
  • Diabetes, pregnancy, or another medical condition that has weakened the immune system
  • Insufficient drying of damp skin

Treatment

  • Topical antifungal creams such as nystatin, miconazole nitrate (Micatin, Monistat-Derm), and clotrimazole (Lotrimin, Mycelex) are generally curative. One-time oral fluconazole (150 mg) or itraconazole (600 mg) therapy is effective and maybe a more appealing option for some patients.

Preventive Measures of Cutaneous Candidiasis

Candidiasis of the skin can usually be avoided with simple home remedies, the most important of which is good hygiene. Washing and thoroughly drying the skin regularly can keep it from becoming overly moist. This is critical for preventing Candida infections.
