Summary about Cardiomyopathies in English

Cardiomyopathy is a heart muscle disease that makes it difficult for your heart to pump blood into the rest of your body. Cardiomyopathy can lead to heart failure. The main types of cardiomyopathy include dilated hypertrophic and restrictive cardiomyopathies. The treatment, which may include medications, surgically implanted devices or, in severe cases, heart transplantation, depends on the nature of the cardiomyopathy and the severity of the disease.

It is not a single disease but a group of diseases that affect the delicate heart muscles.

Causes:

The cause of this cardiac disorder is unfortunately unknown. But in most of the cases, the patient gets it from his diseases parents. In rest of the cases, the patient got it from the ad habit of alcohol or cocaine consumption, heavy metals, coronary heart disease, and specific viral infections.

Symptoms:

During the early onset of the disease, there may be no appearance of symptoms. With the progression of the disease some patients may have

  • shortness of breath
  • tiredness
  • swelling of the legs
  • irregular heartbeat
  • fainting

Treatment:

Treatment method depends on the type of cardiomyopathy and the degree of the damage. Treatments may include lifestyle changes, medications, or surgical method. To consult the best cardiologist in Lahore please visit MARHAM

Symptoms of Cardiomyopathies

In the early stages of cardiomyopathy, there may be no signs or symptoms. However, as the condition progresses, signs and symptoms appear, such as:

  • Breathlessness while doing any activity or even when you are at rest
  • Difficulty lying flat for sleeping
  • Abdominal bloating due to fluid buildup
  • Swelling of the ankles, legs, and feet
  • Cough while lying down
  • Heartbeats that feel rapid, and pounding
  • Fatigue
  • Lightheadedness, dizziness, and fainting
  • Chest discomfort or pressure

If not treated, the signs and symptoms tend to worsen. The condition may worsen quickly in some people, but it may not worsen for a long time in others.

Causes of Cardiomyopathies

The cause of cardiomyopathy is frequently unknown. However, in some people, it is caused by another condition (acquired) or is passed down from a parent (inherited).

The following are some of the health conditions or behaviors that can lead to acquired cardiomyopathy:

  • Long-term high blood pressure
  • COVID-19 infection
  • Long-term rapid heart rate
  • Heart tissue damage from a heart attack
  • Heart valve problems
  • Metabolic disorders like obesity, diabetes, or thyroid disease
  • Infection that causes inflammation of the heart
  • Lack of essential minerals or vitamins in your diet like thiamin
  • Iron buildup in the heart muscle
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Growth of tiny lumps of the inflammatory cells in any part of the body, including the heart and lungs
  • Connective tissue disorders
  • A buildup of the abnormal proteins in your organs
  • Use of cocaine, anabolic steroids, or amphetamines
  • Drinking excessive alcohol over many years
  • Use of chemotherapy drugs and radiations to treat cancer

Preventive Measures of Cardiomyopathies

Cardiomyopathy is difficult to prevent in many cases. If you have a family history of the disease, tell your doctor. Cardiomyopathy and other types of heart disease can be reduced by living a heart-healthy lifestyle and making lifestyle choices such as:

  • Avoiding the use of cocaine or alcohol
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Controlling high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes
  • Getting regular exercise
  • Reducing your stress

Treatment

The treatment you receive will depend on which type of cardiomyopathy you have. Treatments of Cardiomyopathy include:

  • Different types of medications
  • Different devices are surgically implanted in your heart to improve its function and relieve symptoms, including a Ventricular assist device, Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, and Pacemaker.
  • Non-surgical procedures such as Septal ablation and Radiofrequency ablation
  • Surgeries such as Septal myectomy and Heart transplant.
