  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Feeling cold
  • Muscular pains
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Low blood pressure
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Diarrhea
  • Respiratory distress

These symptoms may appear after 2-4 weeks of the following exposure. The fatality rate for this disease is 50%.

Causes of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome is caused by hantavirus which can be contracted through dropping, saliva, and excreta of infected rodents. The primary cause of HPS remains to be the presence of rodents in and around the living spaces.

Risk Factors of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome

Risk factors for HPS are the rodents infested places. The presence of rodents infected with hantavirus is the sole cause of this problem. his virus can spread through rodents bites, by eating food contaminated by rodents, and also by inhaling droplets of saliva, excreta or urine of infected mice through the air.

Activities that elevate the risk of catching this virus are:

  • House cleaning especially storerooms
  • Cleaning building that was closed for a long time
  • Camping
  • Hiking
  • Construction and pest control activities

Preventive Measures of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome

Prevention of HPS relies on eliminating rodents from your home, vacation spots, and offices. Seal holes or any openings from where they can sneak into your living spaces. Use traps to further limit their presence. Do not keep food waste outside as these will attract rodents. If you clean rodent-infested areas take stringent precautionary measures to avoid contact with the virus.
Wet the dust and dropping carefully without stirring up dust. The lesser the chances of the virus to get into the air the lower are the chances of getting hantavirus respiratory syndrome.
